Harris County Commissioners Court on Thursday gave final approval to its financial plan for the upcoming year, including an 8% increase in the county's property tax rate for the new fiscal year beginning on Oct.

Harris County Commissioners Court voted to increase property taxes from 3.5 percent to 8 percent under next fiscal year's $2.67 billion budget.

The district attorney’s office failed to submit an eligible proposal during the budgeting process, leading to an automatic funding cut of $6 million.

Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens said recent decisions by Hinds County supervisors will make residents less safe. He said despite supervisors raising taxes, positions at the district attorney’s office are being cut and salaries are being slashed.

Elected officials will receive a 9.2% raise this year – their first pay increase since 2016 – but Harris County's eight elected constables won an even higher 17.5% increase after taking their salary complaints to a grievance committee last month.
