A North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper tried to stop the who plummeted from the road after driving onto a section damaged by Tropical Storm Helene.

The crash was just miles from the Tennessee state line. North Carolina officials have said for weeks now that the stretch of I-40 remains closed after flooding from Hurricane Helene washed out large parts of the highway.

A pickup driver died Tuesday morning after crashing into a tractor-trailer that was parked on Interstate 95 in Harford County, causing a fire that shut down the highway for hours, according to Maryland State Police.
