Mt. Kanlaon emitted 10,449 tons of sulfur dioxide as of the past 24 hours and has experienced a total of 55 volcanic earthquakes, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Sunday morning.

MANILA: The public must not be complacent as Mount Kanlaon in Negros Island could still erupt, similar to what happened in June, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Director Teresito Bacolcol said on Friday (Sept 20).

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology (Phivolcs) has recorded an increase in unrest in Mt. Kanlaon for the past 24 hours.  At a Bagong Pilipinas interview on Friday, Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said Kanlaon Volcano recorded 45 volcanic earthquakes.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported Saturday that five volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Kanlaon Volcano in the past 24 hours.

About 300 residents within 2.5 miles of the Kanlaon volcano crater were evacuated on Tuesday as a precaution, according to Canlaon LGU.

The local government of Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, has ordered a mandatory evacuation of residents within the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone around Mt. Kanlaon following an earthquake swarm linked to the volcano’s increased activity.

Director Teresito Bacolcol said on Friday, Sept. 20 that Kanlaon Volcano continues to be under Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest), as volcanic monitoring parameters show “fluctuating” seismic and gas emission activities.
