Wind farms off the coast of Massachusetts are “driving whales crazy,” causing an uptick in deaths involving the marine mammals, according to President-elect Donald Trump.

During a Jan. 7 press conference at Mar-a-Lago, Trump called wind energy “the most expensive energy ever” and likened wind turbines to “dropping garbage in a field.” He specifically pointed to the Massachusetts area, and said, “the windmills are driving the whales crazy, obviously.” Trump vowed to halt offshore wind development.

It is the first commercial-scale offshore wind energy project in the U.S. But is Vineyard Wind, under construction off the coast of Massachusetts, contributing to an increase in whale strandings?

NewsCenter 5 spoke to some Massachusetts-based experts as well as local groups opposing the construction of wind turbines in Massachusetts, to hear their thoughts on Trump's comments.
