Two Boston City Council members say the morning pickup and afternoon drop off delays involving Boston school buses to start the school year have reached a breaking point, and they went before the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education on Tuesday to demand something be done about it.

While the cost of living rises and staffing shortages persist in Boston, some officials say tweaking or eliminating the residency requirement could be a solution.

In emails, texts and phone calls, the councilors said, parents have complained about waiting nearly an hour in the morning for buses to pick up their children for school.

Only 34% of school buses arrived on time on the first day of the school year. Key benchmarks are not being hit and officials want answers.
