Authorities in Dallas say a fire that broke out at a shopping center has killed more than 500 animals, most of which were small birds

More than 500 animals at a Dallas shopping center pet shop were killed when a fire broke out at the structure, fire authorities said this week.

Most of the animals died of smoke inhalation, officials said. They included birds, chickens, hamsters, dogs and cats.

More than 500 animals were killed when a fire broke out at a northwest Dallas shopping center Jan. 3, officials said. Dallas Fire-Rescue units responded to Plaza Latina at 11200 Harry Hines Blvd. after a 911 caller reported a structure fire at that location.
